Bryant Retreat for Women
‘Wahine Hauora Whare’
(‘Healing Home for Women’)
Dan Bryant had a ‘soft spot’ for rural women and the demands they faced raising a family while helping to run the farm. In 1928 he started providing hospitality to “tired mothers”, arranging time away from the farm at private homes in Raglan and at Mount Maunganui. In the 1950s he introduced the Bryant House Hospitality Scheme, which allowed women to have a break at his children's Convalescent Home in Raglan over the winter months whilst the children weren’t in residence.
In 1955 the Bryant House Trust Board purchased a house in Cliff Street Raglan to run as a Women’s Rest Home. Nine years later the DV Bryant Trust opened a new purpose-built Rest Home for Women on the corner of Cliff and James Streets, overlooking the inner Raglan Harbour. In 2003 the Rest Home was renamed the Bryant Retreat. The Retreat remains in operation on the site today and we welcome applications from urban and rural women from throughout the Waikato and King Country regions.
It can accommodate up to six women at a time in their own rooms for a usual stay of 11 nights. Access is by way of a General Practitioner (GP) referral and, should they be accepted, guests stay courtesy of the DV Bryant Trust. The only cost for a guest, over and above the GP’s fee, is for travelling to and from Raglan.
The Retreat is managed by Robyn Riddle. She and her six staff aim to ensure every guest’s stay is relaxed and comfortable and that each woman is able to make the most of her “me time”.
There’s no formal programme as such. Life revolves around the three daily meals, allowing plenty of time for walks and reflection, engaging with other women at the Retreat and generally having lots of fun!
